Galaxy and Globus Intro Tutorial
This tutorial shows how to transfer files from your NC State Google Drive into Galaxy using Globus. You will prepare your Galaxy account, connect Globus, and complete your first file transfer.

Galaxy Registration
Register a new galaxy in the system.
- Navigate to the Galaxy Registration page.

Login or Register in Galaxy
Log in to the Galaxy instance or create a new account at https://vclvm178-23.vcl.ncsu.edu/.

Login or Register
Open the Galaxy login and registration page.

Configure Login Window
Enter your credentials in the Galaxy login window.
- Navigate to the login window.
- Enter your credentials and click 'Login Here'.

Register Window
Complete the registration process by creating a public name and clicking 'Create'. An activation email will be sent to the provided email address.
- Create your Public Name, this can only be in lowercase letters
- Click 'Create' and an activation email will be sent to the email address you provided
Create a new password, do NOT use your Unity password

Login to Galaxy
Access the Galaxy login page

Once you have located the email and activated your account you will be taken to this window:

Create FTP User Directory
Create an FTP user directory from the **Get Data** menu.

Globus Registration, Navigation, and Galaxy Connection
Register with Globus and connect the account to Galaxy.

Uploading Large Files with Globus
Use Globus to upload files larger than 250 MB.
- Access Globus from Galaxy and scroll down to the link.
- Click on the link to Globus to upload large files.

Configure Institution Settings
Configure your institution settings by selecting it from the list.
- Select your institution from the list.
- Click Continue and login with your Unity ID credentials in Shibboleth.

Identify the collection from which files will be transferred.

Transfer Files between Galaxy and Globus
Locate the collection number a1206ad1-96d2-40bd-9777-11978cc86605 or 'Gateway user galaxy' to transfer files.
- Search for collection number a1206ad1-96d2-40bd-9777-11978cc86605 or 'Gateway user galaxy'.
- Use the located collection number to transfer files between Galaxy and Globus.

Authenticate the Application
Authorize the application to continue.

Configure Allow
Allow the requested application permissions.

Resolve Login Error
Resolve the login error by refreshing the page or signing in again.

You should see a folder labeled as your Unity email if authentication was successful.

Connect Google Drive to Globus and NC State Research Storage
Configure Google Drive to connect with Globus and access NC State Research Storage folder
- Sign in to your Google account in the browser.
- Go to the Globus dashboard, select 'Accounts', and add your NC State account.

Locate the NC State Google Drive Connector in the Collections or File Manager section.

Authenticate with Continue Button
Continue the authentication process.
- Click the continue button to proceed with authentication.

Select Unity Identity
Select the appropriate Unity identity.

Select Allow Permission
Configure the system to grant permission for a specific action.

Configure Access
To grant access to a resource.
- Select the allow option in the resource settings.

Authenticate with Gmail
Authenticate with Gmail and authorize access to Google Drive for the NC State Google Drive Connector on Globus.
- Select 'Continue' to be redirected to your @ncsu.edu gmail account.
- Authorize Globus to access your Google Drive.
It should redirect you back to the credentials section of the NC State Google Drive Connector on Globus when finished

Return to File Manager Tab
Navigate back to the File Manager tab and view contents on the Panel

Add a Guest Collection from Google Drive
You will add your Google Drive as a guest collection under NC State Google Drive Connector.
- Navigate back to the Collections tab and search for NC State Google Drive Connector.
- Click "Add Guest Collection"

Configure Data Security Settings
Configure the security settings for the Google Drive collection.
- Select the option for extra data security.
- Enter the directory path or browse to select it.
Give your Google Drive on Globus a name and a brief description
This step is optional.

Create New Collection
Enter the required information and create the collection.
- Fill in the required fields.
- Click the 'Create Collection' button.

View Your Google Drive Collection
Locate and view your Google Drive Collection in the Collection Search tab.

Above the contents of your Google Drive, it should show the name of your Google Drive Collection instead of the original “NC State Google Drive Connector”

Recommended PP715 Data Workflow
Configure the recommended data workflow for PP715 using Globus Connect Personal or Google Drive (Globus)
- Set up either Globus Connect Personal on your computer or Globus in Google Drive
- Access icarbon_EEID2 Collection > PP715 Folder > (Your Unity ID) > Galaxy FTP Directory and import into Galaxy

Transferring Files Using Globus

Globus Connect Personal Installation
Install Globus Connect Personal on your device.
- Follow the installation guide for Globus Connect Personal at https://docs.globus.org/globus-connect-personal/install/
- Verify that your personal collection appears in the 'Collections' tab after installation.

Transfer Files from a Collection
Locate and select the collection to transfer files from.
- Search for the collection (your Google Drive Collection or your personal device collection) that you want to transfer files from HERE
- Navigate to the File Manager tab
- Search for the “Gateway user galaxy” Collection HERE

Select Files for Transfer
Select the files and start the transfer.
- Select the files you want to transfer.

Verify Transfer Progress in Activity Tab
Verify that the progress of the transfer can be seen in the Activity tab.
- Navigate to the Activity tab to view the transfer progress.
If at some point you see an “endpoint error”, it is not an issue and the transfer will proceed after a few seconds.

Verify that a successful transfer has been completed by checking for a verification email from Globus.
- Check your inbox for an email from Globus verifying the successful transfer.
